Sierra embers

Last flickers of sunlight on the peaks presage an evening around the campfire at a perfect little campsite on Guest Lake, Bench Valley, John Muir Wilderness – the reward of a long, steep backpack to this remote, quiet retreat.

Be my guest for other photos of Guest Lake. This lake is the third one (after the McGuire Lakes) you encounter on the way up from the North Fork Kings River into Bench Valley. It makes a good base camp for exploration of a dozen more lakes farther up in Bench Valley, a good all-day hike.

The peak is Blackcap Mountain (11,560'). On the other side of it is the Blackcap Basin. See my blackcapbasin tag for photos from that area I took in Aug. 2000.
