Petrified lava flow

Pisgah Crater's lava is molten rock that has turned to stone. That's what "petrified" means, right? But petrified rock is redundant! This lava flow extended out from the cinder cone for 5 miles to the south and west, and 1-2 miles to the north and east. View here is roughly westward.

 

Dozens of lava caves have been found in this area. I have hiked into some of them on half a dozen occasions. At least two of them, Glove Cave and Finis Cave, are as big as subway tunnels.

 

Another meaning of "petrified" is inert or unchanging. Could this volcano erupt again? Probably not. Pisgah, Amboy, and other cinder cone volcanoes in the southwest appear to be monogenetic: erupting only once. Learn about the mystery of monogenetic volcanoes here:
