Photographers prefer having picturesque clouds in their photos, but not this type: the pyrocumulonimbus, made by a forest fire.
The explosive plume of the Creek Fire had just started to the west of George Lake in the Kaiser Wilderness. It was awesome in its scope, but frightening in its potential to come our way. We made a rushed hike out. The fire still burns and has now consumed 250,000 acres.
