Monochrome Sunrise in the Land of Enchantment [Explore]
Like something from a Dr. Seuss book, or a surrealist's vision of a garden, these hoodoos in the Valley of Dreams are especially striking when lit at sunrise or sunset. The sandstone, shaped alternately by wind and water erosion evolves into odd forms akin to mushrooms or crowds of people under flat rooftops, gathering to watch their observers.
Located in the Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness study area, south of Farmington, NM, this outcropping of sandstone formations and others nearby are surrounded by miles of desert grassland and scrub which give little indication that such wonders would appear in their midst.
Not quite as colorful as the hoodoos in Utah, these evoke a different sense of disconnect from their surroundings, almost as if a gathering place for some other lifeforms, not intended to be found by humans.
Congrats on Explore!
