Dry Tanks [Explore]

Capitol Gorge Trail in Capitol Reef National Park is an easy hike in the early morning or late evening, when the sun is not directly overhead. Roughly a mile down the canyon, the Tanks sit a few dozen feet above the narrow gorge.

Although these tanks are usually full of water, the dry spring of 2022 found them empty (though the day after I left there were torrential rains that proved deadly to unsuspecting travelers). Despite the lack of water in the tanks, there were a number of squirrels running around this feature and the view of the higher level of the fold to the south provided a nice contrast between the Navajo Sandstone (white, pink and red) and the Carmel/Page sandstone (yellow and orange) in the foreground.

Congrats on Explore!
