An old saw blade hangs outside the Sawmill in Bodie.
A California State Historic Park, Bodie was a gold mining town that started in 1859 with William S. Body, who met untimely demise that first winter. In 1875 a mine cave-in revealed a rich lode of gold ore and the town exploded soon thereafter to approximately 10,000 people.
By 1881, however, the mining diminished considerably and the town began to shrink. A fire in 1892 destroyed a sizeable portion of the town, and another in 1932 reduced the town to about 5-10 percent of its peak.
In 1962 Bodie was designated a National Historic Site and State Historic Park, the structures in the town are preserved in a state of "arrested decay." At over 8,000' of elevation, it must be a Herculean task to take care of these structures that are subjected to extreme temperatures and weather conditions. However it is accomplished, I appreciate the work that is conducted to make visiting places like this possible.
