Alpha Cascades (Monochrome) [Explore]
The Hungry Horse Dam created a reservoir amidst the mountains astride the South Fork of the Flathead River.
The massive dam (third largest concrete arch dam in the United States) is an impressive sight in a region that is full of natural splendor. Within the Flathead National Forest, and just 15 miles from the west entrance of Glacier National Park, the entire area is paradise for anyone interested in outdoor activities.
The Alpha Creek flows down from the eastern slope of Doris Mountain reaching the reservoir just south of the dam on the western bank of the reservoir. During my visit in mid-June, when Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier NP remained closed due to snow, there was some rainfall, which contributed to the stream's steady but moderate flow.
I'm sure that this is a spectacular sight earlier in Spring when the snow melt drives heavy volume coursing over these rocks, and again in the fall, when the foliage brings a wider variety of color to the scene.
Congrats on Explore!
