Friend or Foe?
I was driving along Roche Harbor Road on San Juan Island when what appeared to be an abandoned limestone quarry caught my eye. So, I pulled over and walked across the street to investigate. Nothing too photographically interesting. As I walked back, this fellow, who had been resting under the pine boughs in the mid-day heat, caught my eye.
I was oblivious to him at first, but he had been keeping his eye on me. Although there was no clean shot devoid of foliage between me and him, I couldn't resist the opportunity to make a few images. I think he sensed that I meant him no harm and was maintaining a respectful distance and demeanor.
I am a landscape photographer, so capturing wildlife is an occasional good fortune, but nothing I am practiced at. As I squeezed off a few shots, a couple of cars slowed to see what I was doing and then began to pull over as well. Knowing that the jig would soon be up, I decided to take my leave of this young fellow, in hopes of minimizing his exposure to others.
