Emergence

Hiking along the Mill Creek Trail in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, it's easy to forget there is a sky under the dense canopy, until you reach a clearing like this.

The early morning sun blazes through the mist, adding a golden vibrance to the blue hued undergrowth, illuminating the ferns and smaller trees throughout the forest below. The forest is thick with humidity with a hint of crispness in the cool winter air. I'm certain these forests look this way year-round.

One of the few old-growth redwood forests remaining, Jedediah Smith is home to the largest coast redwood, which is 20' in diameter and over 340' tall. In addition to a State Park, this is also part of Redwood National Park and the California Coast Ranges International Biosphere Reserve.
