Fall on the Rocks

Autumn is, hands-down, my favorite time of year. The one downside to living in Southern California is we don't have a very colorful autumn here.

A few years, when I returned to the East Coast for work, I had the opportunity to explore Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C. The area was deforested by Union soldiers during the Civil War with logs and branches systematically strewn throughout the area to prevent Confederate passage through the valley. Administered by the National Park Service, the 130-year old, 1,750 acre park was the third national park designated by the federal government.

The largest park in the District of Columbia, Rock Creek provides a bit of a respite from the stress and hustle and bustle of the nation's capital. During this particularly dry autumn, the creek was flowing very low, so I was able to walk out onto the rocks and look upstream to capture the changing leaves in the last few days of their lives.
