60 Miles to Mount Shasta

The fifth-highest peak in California at 14,179 feet, it is the second-hightest peak in the Cascades (behind only Mount Rainier, in Washington).

Part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Cascades have a number of active and dormant volcanoes. Currently, Mount Shasta, the most voluminous stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc, is thought to be dormant.

On a winter day when Lassen Volcanic National Park was closed, seeing this image from the Scenic Byway at sunset was a welcome sight. The peak towers nearly 10,000' above its surroundings, making it the most visible feature in Northern California.
