First Light Crater Lake - Panorama

The fifth-oldest national park in the United States, Crater Lake was formed nearly 8,000 years ago when massive eruptions of Mount Mazama led to the collapse of the peak and created a nearly symmetrical 4,000' deep caldera.

Wizard Island, seen here, is a cinder cone that rises about 755' above the surface of the lake, named by William Gladstone Steel in 1885.

As a tourist attraction, one has to want to visit Crater Lake. It is fairly isolated from the more popular spots in the Pacific Northwest and northern California. To see sunrise here can mean, rising prior to 4 AM to drive nearly an hour to get to the caldera rim. As you can see, however, the opportunity to catch sunrise is not to be missed.
