Cat Man: Just like in Soylent Green!
Part of my Street Portraits Series
I usually shy away from photographing homeless or otherwise destitute people...there are plenty in New York City, but somehow it doesn't feel right to me...
Anyway, I was observing this man in Washington Square Park, thinking he would be interesting to photograph. He had a few large loaves of french bread that he was using to feed the pigeons, as well as a cart full of his belongings and a pan for donations. He was talking to himself, and seemed in good spirits, when he said loudly "...just like in Soylent Green!". I really like that old Sci-Fi apocalyptic movie, and I knew that was a sign, so I started up a conversation with him, saying that that was one of my favorite movies. We sat on a park bench and talked for a while...I asked if he needed any money, and he said "sure, but not too much". He very kindly allowed me to take a number of pictures...I took like 7 or 8...and explained I was a perfectionist...but it took that many shots before he got tired of corny poses and just gave me a natural look. He says his name is Cat Man...that's what people call him, anyway.
I'll be away for a few days, out in the Poconos. I'll catch up on all of your photostreams when I get back..!!
