me_after_draft

I was in a mood I'm rarely in here. Very happy, and high on adrenaline. For I had just won my first draft online.

You see, I play this game called Magic the Gathering. It's been around for about fifteen years now, though I haven't been playing it quite that long. It's played with its own cards and can almost be described as "chess meets poker," in that it's highly strategic and skill-based yet still has an element of luck to it that makes the game interesting.

Anyway, there's an online-based version of this game where you can play with someone pretty much anytime you want (with physical cards, you need someone to play against). In addition to the "kitchen table"-type play (people just playing for fun), there's a competitive area where there's always tournaments running. They have larger tournaments with decent prizes, then they have small 8-person single-elimination mini-tournaments which take less time and pay lower prizes. One of the formats (or kinds) of tournament they have for these mini-tournaments is called "draft," so the mini-tournament itself is called "a draft."

In the four years or so I've been playing this game online, I've tried several times, yet I'd only made the final round of these once before. Today, not only did I make the final round, but I won the whole thing. While it may be a very minor accomplishment in the game itself, it made me very happy, especially since I hadn't played the game for about three months.

So, I'm happy. And now you know a little about my other hobby.

(And, no, I didn't get in trouble for taking this picture, but I don't think anyone noticed. :) )
