Day 224 (590) - The Detective

So Valette added a bit of flair to her 52 weeks project when she started the "Sunday Assignment," where her boyfriend gives her a task for the week's Sunday self portrait. A few weeks back, she started a group to open up the week's assignment to anyone to do.

Last week's assignment was Femme Fatale, but as I'm neither fatal nor female, I had to go with another angle... one that let me be me.

This was one of the more elaborate ones I've done, enlisting the help of my father to set things up, move things around, be a focus target, etc. First, we found an abandoned parking lot. We burned through a bunch of smoke balls to figure out the direction of the wind and where to put the flashes to effectively light the smoke bank. Then, we laid down a bunch of water on the pavement to make it have a more appropriate feel, then (and only then!) did we set out the real smoke bombs (and they were good at it, too, probably a good solid minute or two of smoke) and started snapping.

The lighting? The 580 EX II is off to camera right, about two paces off the right-center of the frame, full power @105mm. The 430 EX is off to camera left, about two paces off the left edge of the frame, slightly below the center of that edge, full power @70mm. Both are behind the me relative to the plane of the sensor and pointed slightly backward (really toward one another) and fired by the ST-E2 atop the camera. And I'm sure I need to charge my batteries after that.
