The Southern Lapwing is a conspicuous inhabitant of grasslands and pastures from Panama and northern South America south to Tierra del Fuego.
Southern Lapwings feed mainly on insects, as well as small fish and aquatic invertebrates. They are largely sedentary.
Southern Lapwings are exclusively ground dwelling birds. They will move around their home ranges mostly by walking or by short flights (approximately 10-20 m). Short flights are used for moving between feeding patches.
