It's like a pergola, but not.
It's some contractor's notion of faking a pergola. Yeah. With finish nails shoe-horning in where the short-beams meet the actual roof-beams... and any strong vine would probably pull entire pieces off just from weight. Rather surprising it's lasted thirty years, really.
The leo wants to replace this with some kind of bamboo roofing (see one of the porch-cover ideas in the garden-idea set). The lizard says brick arches -- in the "I really wanna be a spanish-like ranch" contractor style -- would clash badly with thin, clean lines of bamboo overhang, but the leo really likes the arches.
Obviously, the house remains at impasse. Further details as the situation develops.
