Berani's cajun redneck is showing =)
This is an adult Sumatran orangutan named Berani. Berani means "brave" in Bornean. He is a member of a species that is endangered in its Indonesian homeland. Berani was born in captivity. He has been known to escape his encloser so his keepers have to be careful which enrichment activities he uses. He once took a burlap sac and layed it over the wire to escape. He took a little stroll, scared the daylights out of everyone in the zoo and calmly climbed back into his encloser when he was done with his walk. He is a favorite at the zoo.
Orangutans are the only exclusively Asian genus of extant great ape. The largest living arboreal animals, they have proportionally longer arms than the other, more terrestrial, great apes. They are among the most intelligent primates and use a variety of sophisticated tools, also making sleeping nests each night from branches and foliage. Their hair is typically reddish-brown, instead of the brown or black hair typical of other great apes.
The species has been assessed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List since 2000. Most of the wild ones are on protected areas.
