from flagstones to stars

I've put this together inspired by a question of jorge. it's kind of a fast tutorial for an older model on my photostream.

this model has many fathers and mothers. I'll try to mention the ones that influenced me here but there are others out there, too, who had the same ideas.

some remarks:

- start with a 1:16 triangle grid on a hexagon,

- fold 6 rhombi in the center as in the start of a flagstone pattern. for that you should really have a look at peter keller's great just rhombii tutorial.

- fold a bit of the paper to the back to create the big outer star shape on the front. that was claudia maroska's idea.

- in the center on the back there's a hexagon twist. pull that twist to the front of the paper. this is not an original idea, it's been done before by many people. my most direct influence in this should be melina hermsen who loves pulling and pushing structures from one side of the paper to the other. more detailed pictures of the process can be found again in peter's "just rhombii" tutorial, starting at this step.

- now that you have the hexagon on the front you can apply a decreeping process to it and get results as in

mawelucky's zig zag stars or andrew hudson's logarithmic windmill respectively. again the process is documented in peter's tutorial. you can also have a look at andrew hudson's video.

have fun folding! :-))
