christine edison's framed stars (howto)
some hints on how to fold christine edison's framed stars tesselation. this is supposed to be a companion to christine's original instructions. they are really good, but I am not very comfortable with folding triangle twists while part of the paper is standing up threedimensionally (and isn't allowed to change its shape). so I tried to fold things flat and arrived at this kind of "base" for the framed star which can be tesselated without too much effort.
start with a pleated hexagon with sides of 3 grid divisions each, the depth of the hexagon is one grid line.
on the pleats at the hexagon's corner count 3 grid steps away from the corner and place a triangle twist there. so from the triangle's to the hexagon's corner you'll have 2 grid lines.
the hexagon will become the star. so for a tesselated version it might be best to tesselate these hexagons connected by triangles.
to form the star you'll have to puff up the hexagon and push in its corners. the framed star forms on the other side of the paper. depending on how you shape the puffed up hexagon you can easily fold variations of this design.
