Buttercream frosting

I refrigerated the frosting in an air-tight container overnight and let it come to room temperature the next day to frost the cupcakes. The frosting curdled and separated. Tasted great, just couldn't hold its consistency to frost the cupcakes. Not sure what went wrong...
