OLD MEDIEVAL BRIDGE OF MADERUELO, SEGOVIA, SPAIN, 2022
Maderuelo is a Spanish municipality and town in the north of the province of Segovia, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León.
It has a population of 125 inhabitants (According to the 2021 register).
It consists of a partially demolished walled enclosure, but the access gate to the old city is preserved.
Its urban center has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC), in the category of Historic Complex.
HISTORY: Maderuelo was originally repopulated after recovering the land, which had been previously invaded by Muslim forces, by Count Fernán González in the 10th century.
Its boom continued until the twelfth century, which then had ten parishes, but a century later it fell into decline (thirteenth century).
In the 14th century, it lost part of its population, which left to repopulate the south of the Iberian Peninsula.
During the dictatorship of General Franco, the construction of the Linares reservoir meant that the neighboring town of Linares del Arroyo was submerged, while its population was transferred to the vine town La Vid in the province of Burgos, Castilla y León, Spain.
Due to the rising water level of the Linares reservoir, the old medieval bridge over the Riaza River was submerged, making it necessary to build a new bridge.
When the level of the Linares reservoir drops due to drought, the old medieval bridge re-emerges quite intact, as seen in this photo.
In the background, among autumn trees, you can make out the Romanesque hermitage of Vera Cruz (True Cross), from the 12th century, declared an architectural-artistic monument on December 6, 1924.
It was necessary to protect the beautiful fresco paintings of this hermitage of Vera Cruz, due to the rise in the level of the waters of the Linares reservoir.
You can currently admire them in the Romanesque Room of the Prado Museum, where they were moved in 1947, due to the risk of flooding of said hermitage.

Debido a la crecida del nivel del agua del embalse de Linares, el antiguo puente medieval trazado sobre el río Riaza quedó sumergido, con lo que fue necesario construir un nuevo puente.
Cuando por motivo de la sequía baja el nivel del embalse de Linares, vuelve a emerger bastante intacto el antiguo puente medieval, como se ve en esta foto.
Al fondo, entre árboles otoñales, se puede adivinar la ermita románica de la Vera Cruz, del siglo XII, declarada monumento arquitectónico-artístico el 6 de diciembre de 1924.
Hubo que proteger las bellas pinturas al fresco de esta ermita de la Vera Cruz, debido a la subida del nivel de las aguas del embalse de Linares.
Tú puedes actualmente admirar en la Sala del Románico del Museo del Prado, adonde fueron trasladadas en 1947, por el riesgo de inundación de dicha ermita.
