"News of the death of Mr Naylor Hillary reached here yesterday. He died on Monday morning at his residence, Ferry Road, after only a short illness, brought on by a severe cold, resulting in an attack of bronchitis, which terminated fatally. Mr Hillary has been long and favourably known in this and the Waimate districts for many years in his capacity of County Engineer. That position he lately resigned to take charge of Messrs Jones and Peters railway contract at Woodville, North Island. Mr Hillary had many friends in South Canterbury, where he was known as a thoroughly competent, hardworking and concientious officer. He leaves a widow and large family to mourn his loss."
