“In 1933 became the first woman elected to the Parliament of New Zealand. New Zealand women gained the right to vote in 1893, though were not allowed to stand for the House of Representatives until the election of 1919. McCombs had previously contested elections in 1928 and 1931.”

OBITUARY
MR JAMES McCOMBS.
The death occurred suddenly this morning of Mr James McCombs member of Parliament for Lyttleton (sic). He was 60 years of age. Mr McCombs became ill last week and had a slight stroke on Saturday from which he rallied and appeared to be recovering. His condition yesterday caused no concern, but he died from heart failure in bed early this morning.
He leaves a widow, Mrs Elizabeth McCombs, who is a member of the Christchurch City Council, a daughter, Miss Patricia McCombs, and a son, Dr. Terence McCombs, who is on the teaching staff of Christchurch Technical College and is well known as a university oarsman.[1]
