OBITUARY.
MR, W. J. MACDERMOTT.
The death of Mr. W. J, MacDermott on Thursday removed a well-known and highly respected temperance worker, Mr. MacDermott was one of the pioneers of the temperance movement in New Zealand, and was largely responsible for the establishment of the Auckland Band of Hope Union, of which he was for many years an active and energetic secretary. He organised many of the annual children's festivals in the Town Hall. Mr. MacDermott also took a prominent part in the prohibition movement, and was secretary of the Auckland Prohibition League, and was in charge of the Auckland office of the New Zealand Alliance.
Born in London in the year 1861, Mr. MacDermott emigrated to New Zealand with Mrs. MacDermott in the sailing ship Waitangi, and arrived in Auckland in the year 1873. He was by trade a compositor and for 26 years was on the staff of the NEW ZEALAND HERALD. He was interested in the once-popular lantern lectures and entertainments, many of which he organised, and upon the advent of moving pictures he became one of the pioneers of the present-day cinema, leaving the Herald in order to travel New Zealand with some of the earliest picture programmes. He later gave up this enterprise in order to devote his whole time to temperance work, and was in active service until incapacitated by a serious accident in 1922. Mr. and Mrs. MacDermott celebrated their golden wedding three years ago.
Mr. MacDermott is survived by his wife and one son, Mr. Archie MacDermott, of Rotorua, and five daughters, Mrs. Ramsey and Miss MacDermott, of Auckland, Mrs. Frank Munro and Miss Mary MacDermott, of Rotorua, and Mrs. William Beattie, of Opotiki. There are 23 grandchildren. The funeral will take place this afternoon at Waikumete Cemetery. [1]
