SUDDEN DEATH OF A DOCTOR

Dr. Richard Coom died suddenly this morning.[1]

Auckland Star, Volume XXXVII, Issue 146, 20 June 1906, Page 3

The death occurred suddenly during the early hours of this morning of Dr. Richard Coom, Karangahape-road. The deceased gentleman, had been ailing for a few days, but did not take to his bed, and went out to see his patients yesterday. Dr. Coom was a Cornishman. He took his degrees from Guy’s Hospital, London, and practised for a little while in England. Then he emigrated to New Zealand, taking up practice in Auckland. For eighteen years he had been the medical officer for the “City of Auckland" Foresters Lodge, and for some years he was honorary surgeon to the [St Stephens*] Orphan Home, Parnell. Dr. Coom was of a good-natured disposition, and his kindness to many poor patients bad made him exceedingly popular. He leaves a widow, but no family. Dr. Coom's brother is chief engineer for the Government railways at Wellington, and he had a sister living in England. [4]

…was a younger brother of Mr John Coom, the Engineer-in-Chief for Working Railways. He came of an old Cornish family, and in his youth associated with ‘Q’ the famous novelist. He arrived in New Zealand about 26 years ago and has enjoyed a wide popularity.[5]

Observer, Volume XXVI, Issue 41, 30 June 1906, Page 4

Dr Richard Coom, who died somewhat suddenly last Thursday, was a conspicuous figure in medical circles twenty years ago, when he was a recent arrival, and when his fine figure and flowing beard did as much to make him a man of mark in the community as his professional attainments. Recently, his practice has for the most part been confined to lodge and insurance work. Dr Coom was a man of genial disposition and rare kindliness of heart, most amiable and desirable qualities in themselves, but at the same time qualities that do not frequently make for financial success. Mr Coom, of the railway engineering department, was a brother of his, and one of his sisters is the widow of a Russian general who at one time was Governor of the Russian province of Orenburg.[6]
