My Son

This is an extremely vulnerable topic for my family and myself. My son suffers from severe autism, he is unable to communicate verbally, he has never uttered the word "mom" or "dad", never expressed his feelings verbally, never been able to tell us he loves us. There is little in a typical day he can do without help and guidance. For large parts, he is trapped in his own internal world and battles overload of his senses frequently. Moments of locked eye contact are extremely rare. He struggles, he suffers, we suffer.
Seeing past his autism and discovering him as a person, as an individual with traits other than what is forced on him by his autism has been the hardest challenge I have ever been confronted with in my life. It's a battle I fight every day, with big losses and small victories. This image shoes a small victory as his eyes and the lens of the camera lock for just long enough, allowing me to capture a piece of who he is as a person.
