A rude awakening
In the process of checking the compost bin in my garden for springtails, this weevil suddenly appeared on the top of the bin! I felt a bit bad, as I'm sure I must have accidentally disturbed it from its slumber somehow (I can't imagine it was out and about in the cold)! I took a couple of shots and placed it in a sheltered spot inside the compost bin.
I took this image with my MP-e 65mm lens at about 2x magnification, with some Blue Peter-style diversion of my on-camera flash! I still need to sort a better cunning plan for my flash; I just need some free time!
If anyone knows the ID I'd love to know---thanks to rockwolf and Eddie the Bugman for a possible ID of Hypera species, and to Boris for a more specific ID of Hypera rumicis.
