UNDP Mexico - Get Down to Work - beekeeping, oregano picking, corn and milpa farming, sustainable forestry on Yucatan Peninsula

The Sudzal farmers believe that organic beekeepers are key guardians of the forest.

Each hive supports the sustainable management of more than 70 hectares, through the pollination of cash crops and wild/endemic plants; through the hives’ integral role in preserving biodiversity, wildlife habitats, healthy food chains, and the native fauna that depend on them; and by supporting sustainable livelihoods for locals. Because the cooperative in participating in the organic market, they need to ensure that the whole landscape if free of any chemical, thus fostering agroecological practices. The GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) and the Programa de Manejo de Riesgos (PMR – Risk Management Programme in English) are therefore supporting an expansion of beekeeping in Mexican forests, in order to bolster and equitably distribute the social and environmental benefits.
