Manta swimming companion

This Manta Ray (Manta alfredi), like most Mantas, is curious about humans and allowed me to swim alongside it taking pictures.

I cannot tell you what an extraordinary experience it is to be so close to a large sentient being that watches you watching it.

The cephalic lobes of this young Manta are rolled up indicating that it is not feeding. (And the fact that it has it's mouth shut!)

In June 2009, the Hawai'i legislature passed a bill protecting Manta Rays in the waters around Hawai'i.
