Sophie

It's a demur, lady-like portrait by Karen Heston, our friend, the artist & Bean's nanny -- as it were. (I deduce this so many years on because Karen had a Polaroid & I did not.)

Sophie poked her eye while running gleefully, madly throught the bushes. Surgery saved it but to no use; although after it healed she never seemed to mind. Gastly appearance, but we got used to it.

She also had a fibular transposition (knee surgery) and on another occasion was hit by a taxi -- from which she got up and ran home alone for a hearty supper (across two busy intersections).

It's the kind of excellent parenting that toughens up first children.
