Painting revisited

This painting represents one death of a former patient, in particular but also the many deaths that are difficult and sudden and unpleasant. These kinds of experiences have been few and far between in my 22 years of hospice nursing. One such experience with "James", many years ago will never leave my heart or mind. It taught me that when you have done all you can and all you know to do, what is left to do is to just be with that person who is dying and become "present" to them. In so doing you become what they really needed all along..... a midwife to the dying.

When James suddenly hemorrhaged to death, all I could do is hold him in my arms and speak in his ear. "Let go.... Go to Godde"
