Bettina...
This is the lovely Bettina. I met her as I was walking in the 5th arr. in Paris. She was waiting for a bus, and so I thought I would ask her permission to take her photo. No, thank you, she said, so politely and sweetly. Which made me want her photograph even more :) She didn't speak a word of english, so I had to beg, cajole and flatter her in my best elemental French. We started a conversation about other things in the meantime, and I learned that she was originally from Rome and has been living in Paris for over 50 years. She was very proud of the fact that she was 85 years old as she told me several times :) In the end, I guess I just wore her down, because just as she spotted the bus coming, she turned to me and said, OK, just one ...

Update Feb 2010: after moving to Paris 2 years later I actually bumped into Bettina again in Monoprix. She didn't recall our encounter but she's still as lovely as ever .... I regret not asking her again for another photo....but she did say, just one ... :-)
