Daily Grind

Pepper Grinder.

The Macro Mondays theme Found in the Kitchen offers so much opportunity it was a bit difficult to know where to start. But that always makes it more fun. It’ll be interesting to see where the challenge has taken other folk..

So this is the base of a pepper grinder which must be at least 40 years old (it used to be my mother’s). We still use it today. A good pepper grinder that grinds consistently is a rare thing, so when we find one we tend to hang on to it. We have several and this one grinds very finely.

I love pepper; it's my favourite condiment. I tend to add it to most meals except for salads, hence the title. Pepper adds a piquant edge to the flavour of food particularly for steamed vegetables.

As usual my first idea for an image for the theme was a resounding failure. And the second... But this attempt was better. I liked the geometry, colour and texture and thought it would make an interesting macro, so here we have it.

I captured this image in the kitchen in the spirit of the challenge. Luckily the room has bright tungsten spotlights: strong lighting if you can control the reflections.

I've discovered that the botanic name for pepper is Piper Nigrum? which explains a lot about the Peter Piper tongue twister and the brand name for this pepper pot (Peter Piper Pepper Pot). So once again the pursuit of photographic excellence (cough) has had the unlooked-for side effect of education!

Anyway I hope you enjoy the image. Thank you for taking time to look! HMM

[Tripod mount with timer release; VR off. Processed first in LR for contrast and clarity, and cropped to get a strong diagonal and circle. Then into Affinity Photo for curves tweaking, more clarity and a bit of colour adjustment to strengthen the browns; sharpened strongly in Topaz Detail. I tried a vignette but it didn’t add anything.]
