Today (21/09/2023) BIG enjoyed an invite to Woburn Safari Park where we were royally guided by Katy Chapman, Karen and their enthusiastic team. Alan and Pattie Outen were with us too and the sun shone the whole time. The first area by the elephants was quite wild and it turned up a good mix, grasshoppersvetc, bugs and much more. From there we marched over to the far west side where in the past we have had some good finds and today was no exception.

After lunch (thank you WSP) we went to a small paddock of nice rough Greensand grass on a sunny bank where Bishop's Mitre shield bugs and various other flies etc kept the gang happy for a good while.

On the way out Colin, Andrew and I were of one opinion, it was a good day and the enthusiasm for their wild life by our hosts was a joy and a reassurance that when us old foggies are too old to wave a net etc the next generation will carry on the good work. Thank you Katy Chapman and all your team.

Dear Peter

Thank for your earlier comments about those slugs. I shall keep an eye out for more.

Today I found a few snails in my sleep net but I am guessing they are too young for ID purposes but just in case run them by you. There were good numbers in my net and these are just a few I sampled photographed. It was a good day weatherwise and

John Pitts shared 6 photos the BIG team was a little thin on the ground, we were outnumbered by the Safari Park lasses but Colin provided them with nets so they could join the search and fun. from the Flickr app. Check it out.

All the best.

John

to me

Dear John,

I think they are all juveniles of either Cepaea sp. or Monacha cantiana, but difficult to tell. Sorry I couldn’t be there; we are visiting relations near Bolton. I hope the weather was OK.

I might write up the slugs for Mollusc World (and later for the mollusc report for BNHS). Is it OK to use one of your pics?

Best wishes

Peter
