The Malachite P1740232
21/06/2023 Bedfordshire Invertebrate Group visit Whipsnade Zoo to carry out another survey of their native wildlife. Attending were Colin Boutilier, Alan & PattieOuten, Andrew Green, Mike Bird and Sheila Brooke. We were hosted by Tyrone, Bed and Rob the Keeper Volunteer. The zoo had numerous school parties that enlivened our arrival and gave us food for amusement and wonder.
We started at the Goat Enclosure on the NW side of the park looking over to a very gren Ivinghoe Beacon. Here there were loads of nettles, creeping thistle, wooundwort and lots of long grass almost down the slope to the fence bounding the Scarp SSSI. Not much was found here, Meadow Browns, Small Skippers and a nymph Roesel's Bush Cricket. After a good while searching we drove round to the flower rich Lemur Garden (via a swift car detour into Asia land) and finally the Butterfly House Garden where we had a brief dip into the BH and acquaria area for fish, reptiles and some amazing butterflies. On the way out we found the Ring-tailed Lemurs in their shed hiding from the hot sun and hordes of children.
