10/5/2023 Beds Invert Group met again today at Maulden Woods on a beautiful Spring morning with the trees now fully robed in green and Hawthorn blossom lighting up the countryside and perfuming the rides. Starting at the main gate we ambled along the main ride with lots of vegetation tapping and net flourishing. A few butterflies fluttered or posed on newly emerged leaves , Orange Tip, Holly Blue, Speckled Wood and Brimstone. The ground and woods were very wet but the main ride was mostly dry and stable. There were a few hoverflies and at one point I noticed an immature Common Lizard sunning on a log. When we reached the conservation area we spread out over this forest glade but apart from Bugle and Bluebells in profusion it was bare of any inverts. After a a thorough sweep of the glade Sheila and mysel along with Mike Roberts set off back home but as we emerged from thetree canopy the heavens opened and our walk to the car was decidedly damp.
