The Lewisian gneiss found throughout the Outer Hebrides is incredibly ancient – some outcrops are over 3 billion years old. Over huge spans of geological time the rocks at the Butt of Lewis have been crushed, twisted and contorted until today they appear like layers of squashed plasticene.
