I saw two heifers laying contentedly in the rushes at the road end of the reserve P1620715
21/09/2020 An afternoon visit to Dropshort Marsh Nature Reserve and the September reserve check.
Start 2.50pm on a hot and clear blue day. I saw two heifers laying contentedly in the rushes at the road end of the reserve. There were several fresh mole hills and patches of small Blackthorn ( by the first stand of Hazel along the eastern fence ) that will soon scrub up . The cattle have done a good job of reducing the vegetation generally but there is still plenty of Creeping Thistle standing and patches of bramble. The fences looked OK.
At the bottom junction I found a small collection of cans and bottles which I placed together over the eastern fence. Some of can looked as if they had been used for shooting targets as pierced by several small holes.
Generally there was little wildlife about but on the first marsh I found a Wasp Spider and on the second and far marsh a pair of Common Darters.
Also seen
Large White Butterfly
A medium sized Common Frog plus a smaller one.
Brown Argus
Small Copper
Common Blues x 2
A cluster of Agaric mushroom sp
A worker Bombus pascuorum
Heard but did not see a Greater Spotted Woodpecker.
Completed visit at 4.25pm total volunteer hours hrs 1.35m say 2 hours total for report etc
