The Great White Megaliths

The Great White Megaliths of Utah. These giant white hoodoos were an unusual experience to shoot. Utah is generally known for its red rocks and that’s what is most common, but there are large areas with white rock as well. I’d been hoping to shoot these for a while and I thought it would be straight forward after scouting the area in daylight. The shoot was trickier than expected. These hoodoos are giant. You could place a large truck or small building on top of some of them. They are also tightly packed. Anyway, it’s like standing in the middle of a grove of Sequoia trees and trying to get the whole tree in the photo. You couldn’t back up because there were more hoodoos in the way. I spent most of the night shooting at 12mm and shooting upwards. It was unusual and fun but compositions were more limited than I had imagined. 12mm, stacked image, f/2.8, 15 seconds, ISO 6400. Note the green airglow. Low Level Lightning was used. Camera White Balance was 4000K and LED color temperature was 4900K in an effort to create a natural color in the rock.
