Overlooked Overlook
Overlooked Overlook: This is a beautiful river canyon overlook northern Arizona that’s not highly visited, likely because it’s down a 12 mile, 20 km, sometimes rocky dirt road with areas of deep sand. It’s easy to get stuck there, and there was a work crew stuck in the sand the day I scouted the area. You need a capable 4WD for this road. Anyway, if you have the time it’s worth the drive and you’ll likely have the place to yourself. I scouted the area thinking it was in very dark area, but what I didn’t take into consideration was that it looked directly towards Page, Arizona. For those not familiar with night photography, the green sky is due to airglow, a natural phenomena. The entire sky in this direction was glowing green on the photos, and the massive airglow and light pollution from Page, Az. washed out the Milky Way. I’ve done very little processing on the sky except to try to remove some of the yellow light pollution. The sky was actually this green. _____________________________ Technique: Blended shot, all at 23 mm with a Sony 12-24 mm lens. Foreground - 23 mm, f/2.8, 10 minutes, ISO 1000. Sky - stack of 26 images, 23 mm, f/2.8, 10 seconds, ISO 3200.
