one-hundred and sixty-seven.

the kids went on their first visit to the Nasher Art Museum, Duke's on-campus contemporary art museum. the Nasher is SUCH a beautiful space, and i had a great time filming/shooting there today.

one of the most amazing things about this program is the motivational/ideological aspect of it. because it came out of the civil rights movement, there is a strong emphasis on empowerment and peacemaking. every day we do cheers and chants, motivational songs, and words of affirmation. not only is it encouraging and uplifting, but it is also SO fun. and all the kids are really getting into it! i find them breaking into songs and chants outside of harambee, the beginning sequence to our day.

words are really important. what we say and don't say to kids at this age will basically shape them forever. i always forget how important role models are for kids, how they watch every little thing we do and say. we are either building hope and strength in them or we are building lies/insecurities and giving them burdens for a lifetime.

this is our main motivational song, and also my song for the day:

"Something Inside So Strong"
