Winter is coming! Prussian G12 in Royal Württemberg colours.

First of about the loc.

The G12 (later Baureihe 58) was developed during the Great War. From a servicing and maintenance point of view, it was a great disadvantage for each German state railway to have its own locomotive classes with no standardization. Even spare parts for locos of the same class often did not fit their sister locos. This fuelled the desire for a standardized, fast and powerfull goods locomotive.

The result was the G12, a 1’E 2-10-0 goods train locomotive. Between 1917 and 1924 approximately 1490 copies were build. With 1.520 HP and a top speed of 65 km/h the G12 was capable of pulling big goods trains.

My LEGO renditon is powered by a single L motor in combination with a Buwizz battery and receiver. The tender has the same decoupling mechanism as my G8.1 powered by a Circuit cube engine. The loc has LED lighting; two front and rear lights and a signal light fore and aft. The colours can altenate between yellow and red depending on the driving direction and the signal lights between red and green. Big thanks to UrbanErwin for making this possible.

The tender has BBB M wheels and the loc stands on normal LEGO trainwheels. The front wheels are custom MS sized wheels with closed hub caps provided by Bricks-on-rails.de. Coupling rods and valve gear also from BOR. Thanks to MartijnvdL for showing me the trick with the l-shaped thin liftarm behind the wheel.

The colour scheme is based on the Royal Württemberg colours. In reality the dark blue should probably be a bit more black but with Dark Bluish Grey being way to grey/light I choose this as a nice compromise.

About the display.

I wanted to come up with an original design to present this loc. That failed...

My first thought was the brick build smoke. That turned out to have been done already. After googling a bit I found the great work of Owen Meschter. Thanks for being two-steps ahead of me, Owen 😊 I’ve decided to use that as an inspiration and add some more landscaping. I wanted something non-MILS making it look a little more organic. A little bridge over a stream followed quick but looking a the white smoke I thought it would be a great idea to make it a winter diorama. The stag is inspired by Grandmasters.

I’m happy with the way it turned out, let me know what you think!
