Countermarks of various specific designs were used to re-tariff coins whose value had changed, or which had originally been issued by another regime. Often such coins were worn beyond recognition before being punched with a countermark. Frequently provincial coins were also thus marked and used to pay soldiers of the Roman Legions stationed in far reaches of the empire.
