Restoration

After enduing more than a century of exposure to the elements, the statue was in need of major resotration work that could not be completed while mounted on its innaccessible pertch on top of the Capitol Dome. During its six-month's restoration the statue underwent work that included the removal of corrosion, calk, and interior paint; repairs to the bronze; repatination and application of protective coatings of wax and laquer.
