73129_1979_06_Butterley

The original Ektachrome 200 colour transparency has little going for it, being poorly exposed and having distinct leaning verticals. Surprisingly it escaped the waste paper bin in 1979, ending up in the “reject box of interesting subjects”. By converting to black and white and a not inconsiderate amount of effort in Photoshop etc this acceptable image is the result.

British Railways Standard class 5 4-6-0 73129 stands in the yard at Butterley, Midland Railway Centre, 3rd June 1979. It would be another fifteen years before any serious restoration work was carried out and another ten years before 73129 re-entered service at the Midland Railway Centre, thirty six years after withdrawal.

Locomotive History

The British Railways Standard Class 5 4-6-0 was a development of the London Midland and Scottish Railway “Black 5”, designed by Stanier and built between 1934 and 1951. The standard locomotive featured a type 3B boiler (almost identical to that of the Black 5), a higher running plate, standard cab and also incorporated features designed to make disposal easier (a self-cleaning smokebox and a rocking grate). One hundred and seventy two Standard class 5’s were built from 1951 until 1957. 73129 was built at Derby works in 1956, entering service from Shrewsbury MPD. It was part of a batch of thirty Standard 5MT locomotives (73125 to 73154) built with Capprotti valve gear. 73129 remained at Shrewsbury until 1958 when it transferred to Patricoft MPD, where it remained until withdrawal from service in December 1967. Following withdrawal it was sold to Woodham Bros. Barry for breaking up, however it as bought for potential display and restoration in 1972 by Derby Corporation.
