One of the Severn Tunnel yard pilots 08118 at work on the 15th April 1978. In less than fifteen years almost everything in this photograph would have disappeared. As a result of reduced coal and industrial production from the mid-1980s from South Wales, and increases in fixed freight train formations, Severn Tunnel Junction yard and associated locomotive depot were closed from 12 October 1987 with tracks lifted in the early 1990s.
Locomotive History
08118 was originally 13185 and later D3185 and was built at Derby Works, entering traffic in November 1955 allocated to Bristol St Phillips Marsh MPD. It transferred to Bristol Bath Road in November 1961, Newport Ebbw Junction in October 1971 and Landore in November 1979 from where it was withdrawn in March 1980. Severn Tunnel depot was a sub shed of Newport Ebbw Junction in respect to its shunter allocation. 08118 was broken up at Swindon Works during August 1980.
