Tanon Strait
The Tanon Strait is the narrow sea passage between the island of Negros and Cebu . It was declared in 1998 through Presidential Proclamation 1234 under former President Fidel Ramos as a protected seascape in due recognition of the extraordinary abundance and diversity of the cetacean species (dolphins and whales ) ,11 out of 25 species of dolphins found in the Philippines can be sighted in the area including Pygmy Sperm Whale and also Whale Sharks. It is known as an important migration corridor , feeding ,breeding and resting grounds of these marine mammals .
This is also recognized as the habitat of the Nautilus in the Philippines ( Nautilus Pompilius ) apart from the Fiji island.
"On February 7, 2008 the Supreme Court of the Philippines ordered the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Energy to comment on a certiorari petition filed for toothed whales, dolphins, porpoises and other cetacean species in the Tañon Strait to stop oil exploration by Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. Ltd. (JAPEX) in the protected waterway.... The court was asked to recognize the petitioners as "Filipino mammals" with constitutional rights."
