Hythe Quay of Maldon

The Hythe quay of Maldon is crammed with working Thames barges and a home to them .This unique flat bottomed boats with their distinctive sails were once a common sight and were used during the middle ages to carry cargos e.g. to collect hay and mud .They were designed to make their way into shallow creeks ,rivers and estuaries and ports of Essex and Kent . They restored the use of the barges to this day but are mainly used for leisure and recreation .
