Water courses down through the four flights of stairs, forming a little pool and fountain on each level. From this side you can see why they are called "the blue steps." By the way, why "Naumkeag?" It is Native American, clearly, but there are various explanations of its meaning. The one I like best is "place of repose," but it is more likely the Indian name for the area in Salem, Massachusetts where Joseph Choate grew up.
